Questa volta parliamo con una studentessa che dopo una laurea in economia ha deciso di studiare per diventare una sviluppatrice.
Parliamo un po’ con lei.
Che cosa ti ha portato a cambiare curriculum di economia e IT?
Ho sempre avuto un’inclinazione verso la tecnologia. Mentre crescevo, mi ritrovavo sempre ad essere la persona giusta per risolvere un problema. Non ero una programmatrice o un genio della tecnologia, ma riuscivo a trovare la soluzione ai problemi.
Non ero nel campo della tecnologia ma in qualche modo tornava indietro come un boomerang. Ho cercato di imparare a programmare, fermarmi un attimo e poi rifarlo. Fino all’anno scorso, quando alla fine ho deciso che avrei dovuto smetterla e iscrivermi a un Master in IT.
Su instagram hai una raccolta di storie dedicate al volontariato nell’IT. Cosa ti è piaciuto fare?
Quando sono arrivata a Melbourne, non conoscevo molte persone e non avevo esperienza nel settore IT. Ho deciso che fare volontariato in IT sarebbe stato un ottimo modo per conoscere persone e l’informatica. Gli eventi possone essere un buon modo per entrare in contatto con la tecnologia. Uno di questi è robogal, dove usiamo i robot Lego per familiarizzare con i concetti base della programmazione. È gratificante vedere i ragazzi delle scuole mostrare questa passione nell’apprendimento della programmazione!
Nel tuo corso di studi hai già attraversato diversi linguaggi di programmazione. Quali hai incrociato e alcuni di questi ti hanno colpito?
Ho lavorato principalmente con Java nella mia università. Ero abbastanza sicura delle mie basi, ma quando ho ottenuto il mio primo progetto in Java, ero terrorizzata
Abbiamo dovuto creare un semplice sistema di gestione degli inventari. Non pensavo che sarei stato in grado di finirlo. Ho dovuto ricodificare la maggior parte di tutte le funzionalità. Alla fine, sono riuscita a presentarlo con il 95% delle funzionalità richieste.
Ero spaventosamente felice quando ho ottenuto il mio voto per l’incarico! In realtà avevo per la prima volta realizzato un intero programma da zero. Il secondo sarebbe molto più facile o forse sarei diventata ancora pià brava.
La cosa più importante che ho imparato, ed è stata una cosa importante! Come programmatore newbie, siamo troppo impazienti e vuoi andare avanti e iniziare a programmare, ma questo è l’errore peggiore che tu possa fare. Sto ancora lavorando per migliorare.
Nel tuo profilo GitHub, hai condiviso molti progetti. Che valore ha il networking per te?
Molti di loro sono solo progetti per principianti che ho seguito.
Penso che il networking sia davvero importante e questa è una delle aree su cui ho davvero bisogno di lavorare.
Generalmente, ascoltando opinioni e prospettive diverse che possono o non possono essere nel tuo campo. In molti casi, mentre parlo con le persone, non ci ho mai pensato.

What has brought you to change curriculum of economics and IT?
I have always had an inclination towards technology. While growing up, I was the go-to person to solve all the technical issues at home from setting up a phone to figuring out why the internet is not working. It wasn’t really from a programmer or tech genius perspective but just general problem-solving which was mostly an easy google but I enjoyed doing it.
I always wanted to get into technology but somehow got scared and thought maybe I couldn’t do it and felt economics would be an easy path. However, I kept coming back to it like a boomerang, tried to teach myself coding, stop for a while then do it again. Until last year, when I finally decided I should stop this and enrol for a Masters in IT.
On instagram you have a collection of Stories dedicated to volunteering in IT. What did you like to do?
So when I came to Melbourne around nine months back for my Masters, I didn’t know many people and I had no experience in the IT industry. So I decided volunteering in IT would be a great way to know people and the industry. Also coming from a situation where I doubted my abilities and took a longer time to get into technology way before than I should have, I wanted to use my journey and try to promote more women in technology. So, the events I try to volunteer for are the ones that are geared towards increasing the number of girls and women to consider a career in technology. One of them is robogals, where we use Lego robots to familiarise them with basic concepts of programming. It is just so satisfying to see school kids showing such passion in learning about programming!
In your course of study you have already crossed several programming languages. Which ones did you cross and some of these hit you particularly?
I have mainly worked with Java at my university. I was pretty confident with the basics but when I got my first Java Assignment, I was terrified! We had to make a simple Inventory Management System. I remember it was the mid of last week when the submission was due and after talking to my tutor I realised I was on the wrong track. I didn’t think I would be able to finish it. I had to re-code most of it in the last 4 days. In the end, I didn’t only manage it, I was able to submit it with 95% of the required functionalities. I was freaking happy when I got my grade for the assignment! I had actually for the first time made a whole program from scratch. Comparatively, the second assignment was a lot easier or maybe I had become better, still not sure about that.
The most important thing I learnt was design is so important! As a newbie coder, we are just too impatient and want to get on and start coding but that’s the worst possible mistake you can make. I am still working on getting better at this.
In your GitHub profile, you have shared many projects. What value does networking have for you?
Ahh most of them are just beginner projects I have tried to work on as part of the online curriculum I have followed.
I think networking is very important and that is one area I really need to work on.
I feel talking to people in the industry you want to or are a part of helps you learn so much about the industry. I know I want to be in technology but it is a huge sector, I am not sure what is the job role I’ll enjoy the most so hearing about different roles by meeting people does help me gain a better understanding about them.
Also generally, hearing different opinions and perspectives which may or may not be in your field increases your horizon which helps you get better ideas. In many instances, while talking to people, I have felt that is a really interesting way of thinking, I haven’t really thought of it like that.
